QMPLUS UPGRADE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q. When will QMplus be upgraded?
A. QMplus will be upgraded between Monday, 10th July 2017 and Wednesday, 12th July 2017.
Q. Why is QMplus being upgraded again?
A. In order to keep an up-to-date system and to enhance functionality within the learning environment, we must regularly maintain and upgrade QMplus. Currently QMplus is using Moodle version 3.0 technology, version 3.2 is now available with richer features, more reliability and a better user experience.
Q. How will I be affected during the upgrade?
A. This really depends on how you use QMplus. QMplus will have restricted access as of Monday the 10th of July, until Wednesday the 12th of July when the upgraded environment will become available. We advise that you do not plan any activities in QMplus during this time.
Q. What does Restricted Access mean?
A. Restricted access means that although you will still be able to log into QMplus, there will be intermittent outages and not all functionality will be available.
In general, you will be able to read most content that has been added to QMplus, but you will not be able to change or add anything. This includes any automatic restrictions that you have placed on items within the system – for example, if you have set up any content to be automatically released between 10th-12thJuly, this content will not be released as it requires a change to the content, which is not possible.
Some features may also not be accessible, such as grades and Turnitin functionality.
Q. What new features will be available after the upgrade?
A. There are new features that have become available as part of Moodle 3.1 as well as part of Moodle 3.2 – you can read about these features on the Moodle documents website here: https://docs.moodle.org/31/en/New_features and here: https://docs.moodle.org/32/en/New_features. We are doing some in-house development which we plan to release during the upgrade as part of the QMplus upgrade.
We’d also like to invite all staff to our summer event [date and location to be confirmed] to showcase some of the exciting new features and changes that the upgrade will bring.
Q. What about my course content – will that still be available after the upgrade?
A. Yes. We will copy across content (up to one year) from the old version of QMplus to the new version, and this will be available once we release the new environment on the 12th July 2017. It is advisable to check that everything is there after the upgrade. Content that is older than one year (prior to 2015/16 academic year) will be available from the relevant QMplus archive site.
Q. My course does not follow the standard academic year… My course runs through the upgrade, what should I do?
A. You will have restricted access to QMplus during 10-12 July – with some intermittent outages. Staff and students will not be able to make any changes to QMplus during this time, and some features will be unavailable.
Generally, content will be viewable, although some content will not be accessible, such as grades and Turnitin activity. It is advised that you do not plan activities for this week.
Once the new version of QMplus is released (planned for the 12th July) you will be able to continue to use your course area as all content will be transferred. However, some new features will become available and some activities will look different. If you would like to preview the new QMplus environment, please email email@example.com with this request. It is advisable to check that everything is there after the upgrade.
* Please note: QMplus restricted access means that although users will be able to log in and view some content, they won’t be able to interact with the QMplus environment in any way and much of the functionality will be disabled.
We have scheduled the upgrade to take place outside of the standard QMUL academic year, although we realise that there is no ideal date to do an upgrade of this nature, as QMplus is being used throughout the academic year. This date will give the ELU and IT Services teams time to set up test environments and conduct testing, fix bugs and issues uncovered, become familiar with new features and create guides; all before releasing the upgraded environment to end users in time for setting up before the start of the new term. We strongly advise that you schedule any QMplus activities to take place after the upgrade week, that is, from the 17th July onwards, to avoid any disruption.
