Upcoming changes to Turnitin

31 May 2016 Posted in: News Tagged: , By: Gill Ritchie

If you are a user of the Turnitin plagiarism detection service, there are some changes coming soon which will affect you.

During our QMplus upgrade between July 11-13th we will be re-integrating the Turnitin and the standard QMplus assignments. This means you will only have to worry about one assignment type on QMplus. This is something that the majority of our Turnitin users have been asking for so hopefully this will be a change for the better for everyone.

However, in anticipation of this change, there are some things that you need to be aware of and potentially some action that you need to take. Please read the following information to determine how it might affect you. If there is anything that is unclear, please speak to your local e-learning support person in the first instance, or get in touch with the E-Learning Unit on elearning@qmul.ac.uk as soon as possible and we will help you.

The most important thing to know is after the upgrade on 13th July, the current Turnitin assignment on QMplus will no longer work.

This means:

  1. You will not be able to set up new Turnitin assignments as you do currently, you will have to use the new integrated assignment type
  2. Neither you nor your students will have access to any Turnitin assignments that were set up prior to the upgrade date via the updated QMplus. These assignments will be available through the QMplus archive sites but students will not be able to submit assignments there.

This will have a particular impact on you if:

  1. You have assignments which have a submission date after the QMplus upgrade on July 13th, e.g. Masters dissertations or assignments for late summer resits
  2. You will have Turnitin assignments which were submitted before the upgrade date but will still require marking after it.

I have assignments which have a due date after the upgrade date

We recommend that you set up these assignments using the new integrated assignment type. This will be available from June 14th. After this date, you will be able to set up a standard QMplus assignment and turn on the Turnitin option on it. Assignments set up in this way will be unaffected by the upgrade.

Further information on how to set up one of the new integrated assignment types can be found in our post on Turnitin version 2 in QMplus

I have an assignment which will still require marking after the upgrade

If you have a Turnitin assignment which is due before the upgrade but for which marking will not be completed until after the upgrade, you have two choices:

  1. If possible, set up your assignment to use the new integrated assignment type as described above. You will be able to do this from 14th June onwards. You will then be able to mark the assignment as usual even after the upgrade date.
  2. If you cannot set up your assignment with the new integrated assignment type, you will have to access and mark the assignment via the QMplus archive site. Students will not be able to submit the assignment after the upgrade date.

We are aware that this may be inconvenient for a number of users who’s teaching spans the QMplus upgrade date and we apologise for this. We hope that the changes that we are making during the upgrade will provide a better experience for everyone.

If you are concerned about the changes or about what you need to do, please contact your local e-learning support person or contact the E-Learning Unit on elearning@qmul.ac.uk and we will advise you further.
